Montserrat makes for the perfect half day tour just one hour outside the city of Barcelona. This tour will take you on an amazing journey to the mountain and sanctuary of Montserrat, Catalonia’s spiritual soul. Montserrat combines breathtaking natural beauty with a long and fascinating history. The drive up to the monastery along one of the country’s most scenic roads is memorable. The original monastery was founded in the year 1025, and soon began to receive pilgrims who contributed to spread the stories of miracles worked by the Virgin. Once we get to the monastery, your licensed guide will take you on a walking tour of the monastery grounds, and make Montserrat’s nearly thousand years of history come alive. If you take a morning tour, we’ll time it so that we are there in time to listen to the “Escolania”, one of Europe’s oldest singing choirs, before returning to Barcelona.

About half way between Barcelona and Montserrat lays one of Gaudi’s most sublime and also least visited works: the Crypt of the Güell Factory, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This construction includes practically all of Gaudi’s architectural innovations. During our time at the Colonia Güell we’ll visit the rest of the former Güell Estate, of which Gaudi’s crypt is just a small part. This represents an outstanding paradigm of “modernista” industrial architecture. I can’t imagine a better way of stepping back into early 20th century’s society than this walk through the old streets of the Colonia Güell: the houses of the workers and those of the doctor or the director of the textile mill, the old school, the café…it all looks just as it did a hundred years ago.

After visiting the Colonia Güell we’ll continue to Montserrat. Montserrat combines breathtaking natural beauty with a long and fascinating history. In Manresa, we’ll visit the Cave of Ignatius, where the Spanish Saint spent a few months and received the inspiration to write his Spiritual Exercises before heading to the mountain and monastery of Montserrat.

Girona is a beautiful medieval town north of Barcelona, with an impressive cultural heritage and a magnificent and very well preserved medieval historical center. Girona is also known for the town’s long and rich Jewish history. In the middle ages, Girona’s Jewish quarter flourished. Today’s Museum of Jewish History perfectly recreates that period. Other sites worth seeing in Girona are its imposing Cathedral, the church of Sant Feliu, the reflection of the colorful houses on the Onyar River, and the city walls.

As Salvador Dali himself said “This museum must not be seen as a museum, it is a gigantic surrealist object, where everything is coherent and nothing escapes my meaning” so open up your mind and be ready for the unexpected on this visit to Figueres’ old municipal theater renovated in 1968 to house Dali’s works. Dali let his imagination run free in the arrangement of the interior and exterior spaces, and created an environment where every visitor interacts with the museum and gets a different experience. This tour won’t leave you indifferent!
